About the Author

Richard Tregaskis (1916-1973) was an American war correspondent and author. He is best known for his coverage of the Pacific War, and his book One American is considered a classic of war reporting.

Tregaskis was born in New York City in 1916. He attended Columbia University, where he studied journalism. After graduating, he worked as a reporter for the New York Herald Tribune.

In 1942, Tregaskis was assigned to cover the Pacific War. He landed on Guadalcanal with the Marines on August 7, 1942, and he stayed with them through the bloody fighting that followed.

Tregaskis's dispatches from Guadalcanal were widely read and praised for their vividness and accuracy. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the battle.

After the war, Tregaskis continued to write about the Pacific War. He wrote several books, including Guadalcanal Diary (1943) and Invasion of Japan (1945).

Tregaskis died in 1973 at the age of 56.
