Gottlieb attended Harvard College, where he studied English literature. After graduating from Harvard, Gottlieb worked as an editor at several small publishing houses before landing a job at Simon & Schuster in 1955.

At Simon & Schuster, Gottlieb quickly rose through the ranks. He became editor-in-chief in 1964, and under his leadership, the company published some of the most important books of the decade, including "Catch-22" by Joseph Heller and "The Group" by Mary McCarthy.

The Knopf Years

In 1968, Gottlieb left Simon & Schuster to become editor-in-chief of Knopf. At Knopf, he continued to publish some of the most important books of the time, including "Beloved" by Toni Morrison, "The Satanic Verses" by Salman Rushdie, and "Midnight's Children" by Salman Rushdie.

Gottlieb's tenure at Knopf was marked by his commitment to publishing quality literature. He was also known for his willingness to take risks on new and unknown writers. He published the first books by Toni Morrison, Salman Rushdie, and John Updike, among others.

The New Yorker Years

In 1987, Gottlieb left Knopf to become editor of The New Yorker. He held this position until 1995, and during his time there, he oversaw the publication of some of the magazine's most memorable pieces, including "The White Album" by Joan Didion and "The Devil's Highway" by Luis Alberto Urrea.

Gottlieb's tenure at The New Yorker was also marked by his commitment to quality journalism. He published some of the most important reporting of the time, including Seymour Hersh's exposé of the My Lai massacre and David Grann's account of the sinking of the Andrea Doria.
