A Personal Journey Through a Pivotal Year
By Sarah Jane Johnson
In the summer of 1963, Sarah Jane Johnson was a young girl living in Birmingham, Alabama. She witnessed firsthand the horrors of segregation and the struggle for civil rights. But she also witnessed hope and change, embodied by the March on Washington and the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
In her powerful and moving memoir, Child of the Dream, Johnson shares her personal journey through that pivotal year. She writes about the fear and uncertainty that she felt as a child growing up in the segregated South. She writes about the racism that she experienced, both overt and subtle. And she writes about the hope and inspiration that she found in the civil rights movement.
Johnson's memoir is a valuable contribution to the literature on the civil rights movement. It is a personal and intimate account of a time of great change and upheaval. It is a story of courage, hope, and the transformative power of dreams.
