In For Church and Confederacy, Mark Noll tells the story of how the American South became a Christian region. He argues that the Christianization of the South was a complex and contested process, and that it played a major role in shaping the region's history and culture.

Noll begins his book by describing the religious landscape of the antebellum South. He shows that the South was a religiously diverse region, with a variety of Protestant denominations competing for souls. However, he also argues that there was a common core of beliefs and practices that united Southern Christians. These beliefs included a strong commitment to biblical authority, a belief in the importance of personal experience in religion, and a strong emphasis on morality.

Noll then traces the development of Southern Christianity during the Civil War and Reconstruction. He shows that the war had a profound impact on the South's religious landscape. The war led to the decline of some denominations and the rise of others. It also led to a new emphasis on evangelicalism and a new focus on social justice.

In the years after Reconstruction, Southern Christianity continued to evolve. Noll describes the rise of the "New South" and the emergence of a new generation of Southern Christians. He argues that these Christians were more moderate and less sectional than their predecessors. They were also more open to new ideas and new ways of expressing their faith.

For Church and Confederacy is a major work of scholarship that sheds new light on the history of the American South. Noll's book is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of the American Civil War, the American South, and the role of religion in American history.
