Early Life and Education

George Washington was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, on February 22, 1732. He was the eldest son of Augustine and Mary Ball Washington. Washington's father was a successful planter and surveyor, and he taught his son the basics of surveying and engineering. Washington also studied mathematics and military science at William and Mary College.

Military Career

Washington began his military career in 1754, when he was appointed as a lieutenant colonel in the Virginia Regiment. He served in the French and Indian War, and he quickly rose through the ranks. By the end of the war, he was a colonel and the commander of the Virginia Regiment.

In 1775, Washington was appointed as the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. He led the army to victory in the American Revolution, and he was instrumental in the development of the United States.

Engineering Skills

Washington was a skilled engineer, and he used his skills to design and build fortifications, bridges, and roads. He also developed new methods for surveying and mapping. Washington's engineering skills were essential to the success of the American Revolution.

One of Washington's most famous engineering feats was the construction of the Delaware River crossing. In December 1776, Washington's army was trapped on the west bank of the Delaware River by the British army. The crossing was a success, and it allowed Washington to attack the British army at Trenton, New Jersey.

The Father of Ohio

Washington was also a major figure in the development of Ohio. In 1784, he led a group of veterans to the Ohio River Valley. The veterans settled in the area, and they founded the city of Marietta. Washington was instrumental in the development of Ohio, and he is known as the "Father of Ohio."
