Lapham's Raiders were a guerrilla unit that operated in the Philippines during World War II. The unit was led by Robert Lapham, a US Army officer who had been stationed in the Philippines before the war. Lapham's Raiders were responsible for a number of successful operations against the Japanese, including the raid on the Los Baños prison camp.

Background

The Philippines were a US colony at the outbreak of World War II. The Japanese invaded the Philippines in December 1941, and quickly overwhelmed the American and Filipino forces. By May 1942, the Japanese had captured all of the major cities in the Philippines, and the American and Filipino forces had retreated to the mountains.

Robert Lapham was a US Army officer who had been stationed in the Philippines before the war. After the Japanese invasion, Lapham escaped to the mountains and organized a guerrilla unit. Lapham's Raiders were initially a small force, but they quickly grew in size as more and more Filipinos joined the fight against the Japanese.

Operations

Lapham's Raiders conducted a number of successful operations against the Japanese. These operations included:

  • The raid on the Los Baños prison camp in 1945. The raid freed over 2,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war.
  • The attack on the Japanese garrison at Cabanatuan in 1945. The attack killed over 500 Japanese soldiers and freed over 500 American and Filipino prisoners of war.
  • The defense of the Balete Pass in 1945. The defense of the Balete Pass prevented the Japanese from advancing into the Northern Luzon region of the Philippines.

Legacy

Lapham's Raiders were a significant force in the resistance against the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. The unit's operations helped to keep the Japanese from fully controlling the Philippines, and the unit's success inspired other Filipinos to join the fight against the Japanese.

Lapham's Raiders were disbanded after the war, but the unit's legacy continues to live on. The unit's story is told in a number of books and films, and the unit's members are still honored by the Philippine government.
