Walt Whitman

Walt Whitman was born in 1819 in West Hills, Long Island. He was the second of nine children. His father was a farmer and his mother was a schoolteacher. Whitman had a close relationship with his mother, who encouraged his love of reading and writing.

Whitman began writing poetry at a young age. He published his first poem, "O Captain! My Captain!", in 1865, after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. The poem became one of Whitman's most famous works and is still widely read today.

Whitman was a strong supporter of the Union during the Civil War. He worked as a nurse in Union hospitals and wrote poetry about the war. His work helped to shape the way Americans thought about the war and its aftermath.

Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809 in Hodgenville, Kentucky. He was the son of a farmer and a homemaker. Lincoln had a difficult childhood. His father died when he was nine years old, and his mother died when he was ten. Lincoln was raised by his stepmother, who was a strong influence on him.

Lincoln began his political career in 1834, when he was elected to the Illinois legislature. He served in the Illinois legislature for eight years and in the U.S. House of Representatives for four years. In 1860, Lincoln was elected president of the United States.

Lincoln was the president during the Civil War. He led the Union to victory in the war and issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves in Confederate-held territory. Lincoln was assassinated in 1865, just five days after the end of the war.

The Relationship Between Walt Whitman and Abraham Lincoln

Walt Whitman and Abraham Lincoln met only once, in 1864. However, the two men had a deep respect for each other. Whitman admired Lincoln's leadership and his commitment to the Union. Lincoln admired Whitman's poetry and his ability to express the emotions of the American people.

The relationship between Whitman and Lincoln is a reminder of the power of words and the importance of leadership. Whitman's poetry helped to shape the way Americans thought about the Civil War and its aftermath. Lincoln's leadership helped to save the Union and to end slavery.

Walt Whitman and Abraham Lincoln were two of the most important figures in American history. Their words and deeds helped to shape the course of American history. This book tells the story of these two great Americans and their impact on the United States.
