Rurouni Kenshin is a beloved anime and manga series that follows the journey of Kenshin Himura, a former assassin who vows to never kill again. However, the series also provides a fascinating glimpse into the state of swordsmanship in Japan during the Meiji period.

The Twilight of the Samurai

The Meiji period was a time of great change in Japan. The country was rapidly modernizing, and the samurai class was being phased out. However, many samurai refused to give up their swords and their old ways of life. As a result, the Meiji government was forced to crack down on samurai violence.

This led to a number of conflicts between the government and samurai rebels. These conflicts often ended in bloodshed, and the samurai were eventually defeated. The Meiji government then banned the wearing of swords in public, and the samurai class was finally abolished.

Kenshin's Journey

Kenshin Himura was one of the last samurai. He was a master swordsman, but he had also vowed never to kill again. This made him an outcast among both the samurai and the government.

Kenshin's journey throughout the Rurouni Kenshin series is one of self-discovery. He must come to terms with his past as a killer and find a new way to live in a changing world. Along the way, he meets a number of friends and allies who help him on his journey.

The State of Meiji Swordsmanship

The Rurouni Kenshin series provides a unique glimpse into the state of swordsmanship in Japan during the Meiji period. The series shows how the samurai class was adapting to a changing world and how they were ultimately defeated by the forces of modernity.

However, the series also shows that the spirit of the samurai lived on. Kenshin and his friends were all former samurai who had found new ways to live in a changing world. They were still skilled swordsmen, but they were also men of peace.

Rurouni Kenshin is a fascinating and insightful look at the state of swordsmanship in Japan during the Meiji period. The series provides a unique glimpse into a changing world and the people who were caught up in it.

If you are a fan of anime, manga, or Japanese history, then I highly recommend checking out Rurouni Kenshin. It is a truly unique and unforgettable series.
