Early Life and Military Career

Sergeant Gander was born on a remote island off the coast of Newfoundland in 1888. From a young age, he exhibited an adventurous spirit and a deep sense of patriotism. In 1914, when the First World War erupted, Gander eagerly enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

He was quickly assigned to the Newfoundland Regiment and shipped overseas to Europe. There, he fought valiantly in some of the most brutal battles of the war, including the Somme and Passchendaele. Gander's bravery and leadership caught the attention of his superiors, and he was promoted to the rank of sergeant.

The Battle of Vimy Ridge

Sergeant Gander's most famous exploit came during the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917. The ridge was a heavily fortified German stronghold that had defied Allied capture for nearly three years. In a daring assault, Gander led his men up the slopes of the ridge, facing intense enemy fire.

Under his command, the Newfoundland Regiment played a pivotal role in capturing the ridge, a victory that marked a turning point in the war. For his actions, Sergeant Gander was awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest honor for bravery in the British Empire. He was hailed as a national hero and became a symbol of Canadian determination and courage.

Tragedy and Legacy

Tragically, Sergeant Gander's life was cut short just a few months later. On November 8, 1917, while leading an attack on a German trench, he was fatally wounded by enemy fire. He was 29 years old.

Gander's death sent shockwaves through Canada and beyond. He was mourned as a national hero, and his memory has been honored in countless ways. The city of Gander, Newfoundland, was named after him, and numerous monuments and memorials have been erected in his honor.
