Early Life and Education
Neil Alden Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He was the son of Stephen Koenig Armstrong, an auditor, and Viola Louise Engel Armstrong, a homemaker. Armstrong had two younger sisters, June and Dean.
Armstrong was fascinated by airplanes from a young age. He built model airplanes and took flying lessons as a teenager. After graduating from high school, Armstrong attended Purdue University, where he studied aeronautical engineering. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1955.
Military Service
After graduating from college, Armstrong joined the U.S. Navy. He served as a pilot during the Korean War. Armstrong flew 78 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.
NASA Career
After the Korean War, Armstrong worked as a test pilot for the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). In 1962, he was selected to join the astronaut program.
Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 mission, which landed on the moon on July 20, 1969. He and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the moon. Armstrong's famous words, "That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind," are inscribed on a plaque that he left on the moon.
Later Life and Legacy
After retiring from NASA, Armstrong became a professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati. He also served on the National Commission on Space.
Armstrong died on August 25, 2012, at the age of 82. He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
Armstrong's legacy is one of courage, determination, and innovation. He was a pioneer in the field of space exploration and his accomplishments will continue to inspire generations to come.
