The Bennett family is a close-knit one, but they are also flawed. The patriarch, John Bennett, is a successful businessman, but he is also a workaholic who often neglects his family. The matriarch, Mary Bennett, is a loving and devoted mother, but she is also struggling with her own demons. The children, Alexandra, James, and William, are all bright and talented, but they also have their own struggles.

As the novel progresses, the Bennett family is tested by a series of tragedies. John Bennett dies suddenly, leaving Mary to raise the children on her own. Alexandra, the eldest child, becomes pregnant out of wedlock. James, the middle child, develops a drug addiction. William, the youngest child, is diagnosed with a terminal illness.

Through it all, the Bennett family manages to stick together. They learn to forgive each other their mistakes, and they learn to appreciate the love that they have for each other. In the end, the Bennett family is stronger than ever, and they are able to find peace and happiness.
