Cixi was born into a noble family in 1835. She was selected to be a concubine to the Xianfeng Emperor in 1851, and she quickly rose through the ranks of the imperial harem. In 1861, she gave birth to a son, who became the heir to the throne. When the Xianfeng Emperor died in 1861, Cixi became empress dowager and regent for her young son.

Cixi was a shrewd and cunning politician. She quickly consolidated her power and began to rule China with an iron fist. She was known for her ruthlessness and her willingness to use any means necessary to achieve her goals.
