Alice Paul, Lucy Burns, and Their Big Idea
The Story of the Woman Suffrage Movement
Alice Paul and Lucy Burns were two of the most influential leaders of the woman suffrage movement. They founded the National Woman's Party in 1916, which was the first political party in the United States to focus solely on winning women the right to vote. Paul and Burns used a variety of tactics to pressure the government to grant women suffrage, including lobbying, picketing, and hunger strikes. Their efforts were ultimately successful, and the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which granted women the right to vote, was passed in 1920.
Paul was born in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, in 1885. She was the daughter of a Quaker family, and she grew up with a strong belief in equality for all people. Paul attended Swarthmore College, where she became involved in the suffrage movement. After graduating from Swarmore, Paul went to England to study social work. While in England, she met Lucy Burns, who was also a suffragist. The two women became close friends and allies, and they worked together to advance the cause of woman suffrage.
