In her new book, Lost in Math: How Beauty Leads Physics Astray, physicist Sabine Hossenfelder argues that beauty is not a reliable guide in physics.

Hossenfelder is a research fellow at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies. She has written extensively about the foundations of physics, and her work has been featured in publications such as Scientific American, The New York Times, and The Guardian.

In Lost in Math, Hossenfelder argues that physicists have become too focused on the beauty of their theories, and that this has led them to ignore or dismiss theories that are less beautiful but more accurate.

Hossenfelder cites several examples of this phenomenon, including the case of string theory. String theory is a beautiful theory that attempts to unify all of the forces of nature. However, it has not yet been experimentally verified, and Hossenfelder argues that it is unlikely to be correct.

Hossenfelder also discusses the case of dark matter. Dark matter is a hypothetical form of matter that is thought to make up about 85% of the universe. However, dark matter has never been directly observed, and Hossenfelder argues that it is possible that it does not exist.

Hossenfelder's book is a challenging and provocative look at the role of beauty in physics. She argues that physicists need to be more willing to give up beautiful theories in favor of ones that are more accurate. This is a difficult task, but it is one that is necessary if we want to make progress in our understanding of the universe.

"A timely and important book." - Sean Carroll, author of The Big Picture

"Hossenfelder is a clear and concise writer, and she does a great job of explaining complex concepts in a way that is accessible to non-physicists." - The New York Times

"A must-read for anyone interested in the foundations of physics." - The Guardian
